Polar bears

Polar bears are the largest predators on earth and are loners. During a meal, they can eat up to 50 kilos of meat. Basically, polar bears are carnivores but they have also been observed eating berries or seaweed.

Polar bears have 42 sharp teeth so they are able to break thick fur and blubber. The main meal is seals, catching them when putting their head above the ice to take a breath. Polar bears often need to wait for hours for this moment. They sense the seals already miles away, dead animals on nearly 30 miles. Males are significantly heavier than the females.

The maximum age in free nature is estimated at 25-30 years and in human care they can get up to 45 years old. The females give birth only every 3 years to up to 3 cubs. The birth of the bears takes place between November and January, i.e. during winter. A month before birth females look for a cave where they stay until 4 months after the cubs have been born.
